Advent Calendar Help – Adventskalender Hilfe

Lies auf Deutsch
After late night ramblings about unicorns I now am sitting here in the middle of September thinking about preparations for Christmas, isn’t that wonderful? >_<
Anyway, what I am actually thinking about is this:
I want to try creating my own advent calendar for this years Christmas.
The window should consist of a photo and a short story by me for the given picture and this is where the help is needed.

To all you photographers out there:

If you have any photos – be they Christmas-related, snowy or not – where you would like to learn a story behind the picture, please send me what you’ve got.
In total I would, obviously, need 24 pictures, but I can’t promise to have an idea for every one I get, so you can send more than one entry.

So these are the rules for submissions:

  • You have to own the right to the picture. (You will be named in the window/door post of course)
  • The picture has to be decent (no propaganda for violence, racism or other awful things)
  • The picture has to be send to me through comments, messages (e.g. Facebook, Google+ or Mail) or however you fancy.

I guess the absolute deadline would be the 23rd December around noon (UTC +1), but I hope to get the entries done before that.
You wont really win anything with this but recognition for your work and a tale, but maybe that’s enough to lift your Christmas spirit. 🙂
So let’s see if we can pull this off together.
I’m already curious what you’ll send me. 🙂

An all euch Fotografen da draußen:

Re-Wri-Day: About

After correcting a bunch of broken links, I finally started looking at this page again. Usually I use this to portray the change in posts, but I’ll make an exception from that this time.
What is the Re-Wri-Day?
Inspired by EdMooneyPhotography’s Re-Work-Wednesday and based on the fact that my writing style for this Blog has changed over the past years, I kind of created my own version of this.
But why the strange name and what does it mean?
I’m awful when it comes to puns and I couldn’t help myself but to turn re-write and Friday into one strange word: Re-Wri-Day. Sorry…
But in conclusion: These posts are supposed to be always published on a Friday, but not necessarily on every Friday, just the Fridays when I feel like editing an old post beforehand.
And what am I doing with this?
I am taking my old posts from the beginnings of writing this Blog or just former posts and read them again to see what things I can change or add. They wont necessarily be actually re-written, but some changes will be made.
In the Re-Wri-Day post I’ll also give you a couple of thoughts on why I had chosen the topic and stuff you might be interested in.
So, let’s have a look at the page I changed: About
For quite some time now I’ve been unsatisfied with the page and now I finally knew how to change it.
It used to be a rather sloppy, semi-funny page, simply because I didn’t want to give that much away about myself.
But after Blogging for more than two years I found it had to change as well. It just wasn’t me any more, who had written those lines.
When I had given my biography blurb to The Extremis, I knew I wanted to use it for the page and made a draft to save it.
Now after months of not knowing what I want to do with that part and what I already had, I managed to turn it into something I can now identify myself with again.
Now the page is really about me. 😉

Liebster Award

About a month ago DarkFairy nominated me for the Liebster Award, but back then I didn’t really have the time to accept it. Regardless of that: Thank you!

The Award

Now let’s have a look as to what I have to do for this:

  1. Write a Blog post with this award, add the award picture and link to the person who awarded you.
  2. Answer the 10 questions.
  3. Think up 10 new questions.
  4. Nominate 10 Bloggers with less than 200 readers (occasionally it is said below 1000, so you can nominate whomever you like). You are not allowed to nominate your nominator.
  5. Tell the Bloggers that you nominated them.

This sounds pretty similar to the simple tag-thing Fairy gave me last year and it is also used for getting out the word for unknown Blogs. Still, the name of the award, Liebster, turns this into something different.

Liebster is the German word for beloved partner or darling, in the Blogging sense, to me, it means a Blog you hold dear and greatly enjoy reading. So for me it is an honour to be granted this award and be able to give it to other Blogs I like.

Fairys Questions*

*(as translated from her Blog.)

  1.  Have you been at a festival before? If so, which one?
Those who follow me for some time now know that I have been at several Festivals, including: the Wacken Open Air (5 times), the Metalfest Loreley (twice) and the Wave Gotik Treffen with already some finished reviews and the M’era Luna (twice), Out&Loud and Rockharz where I still have to write them.
  2. What is your worst trait?
I think my worst trait is my pessimism. My thoughts can get pretty gloomy and dark at times and you can call yourself lucky that I refrain from Blogging when I’m in a digging mood (meaning: I’m already in a dark pit and manage to dig myself even deeper).
  3. And your best?
I like to believe it is my sense of humour, as I do indeed make people laugh on occasion. If that doesn’t count, maybe my readiness to help others.
  4. Which book is exactly in the middle of your lowest book shelve?
When I was first nominated I was at home and as there is stuff in front of the book shelf I couldn’t have answered the question. In my flat the lowest shelve doesn’t really contain books, so I move one up and that one is full of Manga.
The ones in the middle are Nurarihyon No Mago’s volume 3 and 4, with more volumes and some of Ao No Excorcist on top of them. But they are currently blocked by several comics I acquired on Free Comic Book Day, some other Manga (Deathnote and Bleach) and a book I won at the Expedition Grimm. My book shelve is too small…
  5. What is the ring tone of your mobile phone? .oO(I hope not everyone has a standard ring tone..)
For a couple of years now I’m stuck with a snippet from Edguy’s Speedhoven. When I first heard the song I just knew I wanted it as that, as it has a fast and abrupt start and is therefore quite recognizable. Just so you know: I also have Alestorm’s Heavy Metal Pirates; Happy People from the Bleach soundtrack and a standard called Rogue as alarm tones and the aptly called „message signal 3“ that sounds like someone pulling a few guitar strings, tells me about new messages.
  6. PC-, console- or better yet boardgames?
As the last consoles I had were N64 and a Gameboy Color and I usually only play short games on the laptop, do I go for boardgames with this one. It’s much more fun to see whom you can blame for losing anyway. 😉
  7. Which movie was the last you’ve seen in the cinema?
When I got the nomination it was X-Men: Days of Future Past, as I had just re-watched it with Fairy. By now I’ve also seen Wacken 3D, a semi-documentation on the festival that I still have to review.
  8. I had to occupy myself with so much art, now its your turn: Who is your favourite artist and why?
As I am horrible with names anyway I can’t even think of that many. I just know I prefer art that is more like a picture than a painting, like the way Da Vinci drew. As Whovian do I also have a connection to Van Gogh, but I wouldn’t call him one of my favourites. Well, and as the inspiration for some of his most famous paintings is just a short ride away from were I live/grew up, I have to also name Caspar David Friedrich, but I really don’t have a favourite artist.
  9. Would you choose your job again or if you don’t have one yet, which did you decide to take? For both: Why?
I have a job/profession I’ve been working in for a couple of years now. I’m not sure if I would make the same decision again to take up this job, I just know I would not partake in a dual-mode course of studying again
I chose it, because I had similar lessons in grammar school and thought I would have something more substantial with Computer Science and Business Management than by studying English and/or German language and literature studies… Yeah, I know it’s quite a jump from one to the other.
Still, I enjoy programming, creating algorithms and finding out about different techniques and technologies, so my choice wasn’t that bad. 🙂
  10. What is the answer to Everything? 😉
42 😀 And it’s only a matter of time until I finally start with The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

My Questions

When you receive the award from me you have to answer to the following questions:

  1. What is the best experience you ever had on a concert/at a festival/convention or an other social gathering?
  2. What is the strangest decoration you have at home?
  3. Are you collecting something? If so: What and why?
  4. What was your favourite plushy when you were a kid and what happened to it?
  5. If you had the choice: Would you start Blogging again and about the same topics you cover/ed?
  6. What do you prefer: A handwritten letter, a long e-mail or a short message on the phone/a social network?
  7. Which of your post/categories you write in is dearest to you?
  8. Which movie/book/series/etc. would you like to read/watch/etc. again for the first time?
  9. What is the place you’ve always wanted to travel to, but so far hadn’t had the chance to do so?
  10. How much time could you spent without using any kind of digital formats/mediums? (Internet, mp3s, e-books, etc.)

My nominees

The Blogs I am nominating have most likely already managed to get their 200 readers, if not even the 1000th, but I still enjoy reading them and want them to know that – and again I didn’t manage to find 10 Blogs, but I might add them later.
In alphabetical order:

#1 BiblioSmiles:
A Blog for book reviews, tips on reading and other interesting essays and posts, like their Summerbook Challenge, that I am participating in.
It’s a really interesting page and I still can’t believe that’s only been online for a couple of months…

#2 Ed Mooney Photography:
You might remember me talking about Ed’s Blog on Halloween or during my Re-Wri-Day’s. His posts are an incredible mix of history, ruin photography (pay attention to the clouds, they are awesome!) and storytelling that even caused me to buy a book.
Warning: If you are as easily suffering from Fernweh as I am, you might start planning a trip to Ireland after reading some of his Blog…(I am still wavering between using my remaining vacation days to get over there for Halloween or doing something different with them…)

#5 Geekritique:
This Blog provides you with reviews on books, movies and series, but also grants you a good overview on what is currently going on in the geek-verse and gives you inspiration on what to tackle next on your list.

#4 Piccadilly 1819:
Stephanie writes really interesting posts about series and movies regarding the portrayal of women in them. We already had quite some interesting discussions on some of her posts and I’m sure there will be more to follow them.

#5 WriteTheWhite:
Sherri tries to help her readers to lose the fear of the white page and she does so in an incredible way. I have participated in one of her activities and another one is already drafted. I currently don’t dare to look into more of her posts as it would probably animate me to write about stuff I am not supposed to write about, instead of the stuff I already need to finish…

Well, that’s it for my nominees and questions.
Try having a look at those Blogs, maybe you find something you like as well. 🙂

As for those five: Thanks for many great posts to enjoy, I hope you don’t mind the questions. 🙂

Re-Wri-Day: Weekend of Horrors

If you ever had a look at my archive you will notice that August is the month I posted the least so far. As there is no post in 2012 and only one in 2013 was I curious as to what it was. I thought it was my post for Wacken 2012, but was kind of surprised to find another post instead.
What is the Re-Wri-Day?
Inspired by EdMooneyPhotography’s Re-Work-Wednesday and based on the fact that my writing style for this Blog has changed over the past two years I kind of created my own version of this.
So, let’s have a look at the post I found: Weekend of Horrors 2011
The first thing I noticed in the post while skimming through it, was a weird phrasing for one of the pictures‘ caption. As I hit the Edit-button I soon started reading again, changing phrasings and adding headlines.
In the post I am telling two tales – one is a rephrasing of a Short Story that was read to us and the other of something that happened to us – and I didn’t like the way I wrote them. So I rephrased and highlighted them to turn them into actual tales.
On the one hand am I wondering if I should leave the old entries to be in the writing style I had at that time, but on the other hand do I not like what I wrote and simply have to change it, so I did it again for this post.
Anyway, I probably already arrived at the M’era Luna (where I still haven’t finished the review for 2013), which is my last festival this year.
I’m curious if there will be Daleks again. 🙂

P.S. This is a scheduled post so it might be that it doesn’t reach my Facebook, Tumblr or Google+ page.

One Hundred

In regards to the Book-Week I put a few touches to the list of books I’ve read over at Goodreads. When I started adding the books a nagging feeling rose from the back of my mind: ‚No, it can’t be that you haven’t read a hundred books, yet…‚  With this thought in mind I sat down and thought of the books that were missing in the list and indeed: I have already read more than a hundred books in my life.

From a mathematical stand point this means that I’ve read 6,25 books a year (assuming I’ve started reading on my own with eight), which isn’t really true as I had years were I haven’t read a thing or barely any books and years where I’ve read more then ten.

Anyway, if you’re interested what I did read, have a look the the shelf below, maybe you find something interesting too. (Note: As I can’t remember the names of a few books they are still missing, but there are at least six, so even without the displayed Manga would it be a hundred)

And even though I tried paying attention to it when I was around 94, did I only notice that the re-blog of my Extremis article became my hundredth post afterwards…
I’m also close to having a hundred people following me via WordPress, which is pretty cool in a way and would be way more awesome if you guys would participate a bit more. 😉 (I do unfortunately believe that a couple of my followers aren’t really interested in what I am writing, but instead of me having interest in the stuff they have to sell on their Blogs – feel free to prove me wrong on this.)

With a word count similar to the three hundreds I now leave you to the books below. 🙂

Re-Wri-Day: At the Festival

As I am still trying to finally get the remaining festival reviews done (as you can see from the new To-Finish list on the right) and have already thought about doing what I did for the In Concert-Category for the festival reviews as well I can give you another Re-Wri-Day.
What is the Re-Wri-Day?
Inspired by EdMooneyPhotography’s Re-Work-Wednesday and based on the fact that my writing style for this Blog has changed over the past two years I kind of created my own version of this.
But why the strange name and what does it mean?
I’m awful when it comes to puns and I couldn’t help myself but to turn re-write and Friday into one strange word: Re-Wri-Day. Sorry…

So, let’s have a look at the posts in the Category: At the Festival
First of all I changed the category from simply „Festival“ to „At the Festival“ and modified the post titles accordingly.
Like I did for the concert-reviews I also added additional headlines between different paragraphs in the posts. The posts also got a couple of more line breaks and re-phrasings. There were just too many sentences starting with „But“ or „And“…
In the reviews for the Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum and my first two Wacken, I have now separated the different times I’ve been there a bit better and more understandable. However, I haven’t changed the title of the former to „At the Festival:“ as I don’t really see it as such, but it nevertheless fits the category. The ones for Wacken 2011, Wacken 2012 and the Metalfest 2012 were split a bit differently. Though it divided the days, it also now fits the different topics I’m talking about.
I hope these changes make the reviews now more understandable and I’ll write the new ones like that from the get-go.
Hopefully I will actually manage to do at least one of them before this years festival season starts at the end of the month…

Re-Wri-Day: In Concert

As I have just released my review of the Schandmaul concert I attended last week, I contemplated about the reviews I had published before. As already the name of the category it was put in bugged me I set off to use this in the Re-Wri-Day.
Sorry…
But in conclusion: These posts are supposed to be always published on a Friday, but not necessarily on every Friday, just the Fridays when I feel like editing an old post beforehand.

In the Re-Wri-Day post I’ll also give you a couple of thoughts on why I had chosen the topic and stuff you might be interested in.
So, let’s have a look at the posts in the Category: In Concert
First of all I changed the category from simply „Concert“ to „In Concert“ and modified the post titles accordingly.
I also added additional headlines between different paragraphs in the posts.
In the summarized review for 2012 I made them simply the band name and place of the concert, whereas with the ones for Letzte Instanz and Avantasia I tried to use their song titles as puns (E.g. Journey to the Tempodrom as pun from Avantasia’s „Journey to Acadia„) or just tried to make any kind of remotely funny line, like in the ones for the Paganfest.
It feels like adding sub-headlines helps me to better place some of the information and nicely splits up the masses of words in a post.
I am pretty sure that the next big thing will be my festival reviews, as they are even larger and more confusing than those for the concerts – and I don’t like the category name either.

Re-Wri-Day: Taking the Bus

As I just ranted about another change regarding the city buses I’m taking every day, I thought I might as well feature the original rant in this weeks Re-Wri-Day as well.
So, let’s have a look at the first post regarding buses: On the Road: Taking the Bus
Right at the beginning of the Blog I had thought up the On the Road category as I was still driving between my place of study and my place of work on a regular basis. This however changed when the actual studying (attending lessons and such) part ended.
What now became my means of transport were the city buses and I had a couple of things to tell about them.
The post is pretty much a rant on what is good and what is bad about taking the bus, so with the re-write I tried to form a better structure for the post and even give it some headlines. I also re-phrased a couple of sentences that sounded quite awful. There even was one where I asked myself „What did the author want to tell us with this?„, which is kind of a remnant of my A-level days were we had to analyse and interpret a lot of stuff…
So basically I was unsatisfied with what I wrote in the original post and as I had new complaints on top of that I thought it fitting to ad the Re-Wri-Day this week as well.
And now I am off to see Schandmaul in Berlin. 🙂

The awful moment when you can't properly write…

As I mentioned last time with my new instalment of The Weekend Guess I can’t really put my thoughts into proper posts right now.
And yes I don’t consider this rant to be a proper post either.
There is so much stuff I’d like to write or write about.
So many stories floating in my head fighting for attention.
So many ideas popping up, reminding me of unfinished drafts.
I think I just don’t know where to start…
I really like to complete or add to my stories, but I can’t seem to be able to find the proper motivation for sitting down, planning and actually typing it.
As you know I do dabble in Fanfiction.
I already have a story that awaits its completion since 2012 and I don’t really know why I don’t feel like finishing the next chapter. (Well, maybe it’s because the Manga it is based on are quite weird „lately“…)
I also have plenty of other ideas that I currently don’t feel like working on (see my profile on Fanfiction.net for a look at those).
Still, my mind seems to always wander back to The Return of Magic, a Merlin Fanfiction (season six-thingy) I started recently. I get all kind of ideas for stuff happening towards the end, but I only have a little bit of what should be going on in the next few chapters, where the characters actually meet each other again and stuff…it’s bugging me, but I can’t help it, my muse is weird that way…
I also have brought it upon myself that I want to re-do The Elevator story as Multi-Chapter Multi-Fandom Crossover story. Again, many thoughts on how to continue and little on how to start and finish…
Muse and Imagination thou art* unfair…
I also want to write some proper original stories again, like continuing with the stories of the dwarves that we last saw on their Quest for Ore.
I’d like to finish the missing reviews and reports from concerts and festivals I’ve been at last year and many more things I still have only drafted.
But as soon as I think „Yeah, I’d like to get that done.“ my mind wanders off to totally unrelated thoughts and the procrastination begins.
It’s enough to drive you up the wall (in frustration) or „Es ist zum Mäusemelken“ as we’d say in German (Mäusemelken roughly translates to „milking mice“, so the literal translation is something like: It’s like milking mice. Or something like that).
But on the bright side:
I get more and more comfortable with writing posts that have less than a thousand words…though on the other hand I annoy you with my ramblings instead of posting something proper.
I’m so sorry for that, but as I said: I don’t like it myself, but I can’t seem to help it right now.
Other than that there are a couple of nice things coming up for me, that are also kind of urging me to hurry up with my festival and concert reviews/reports.
Next weekend (after picking up my Bachelor’s degree certification in Elmshorn, a former fellow student in Hamburg and driving back) I/we’ll be having a look at the Jazz Frühling (jazz spring) in Neubrandenburg. Something entirely different to the music I usually listen to.
In early April I’ll be visiting Liathano again in Germany’s capital city and stay for a concert of Van Canto and possibly a medieval market as well.
Just a week after that Brüllmücke and I will return there to see Schandmaul live.
I’m quite looking forward to all of that and maybe it will spur my imagination enough for me to continue or write the stories that are still eagerly waiting to be typed.
See you around and sorry for the rant.

Re-Wri-Day: Hello World

Inspired by EdMooneyPhotography’s Re-Work-Wednesday and based on the fact that my writing style for this Blog has changed over the past two years I kind of created my own version of this.
But why the strange name and what does it mean?
I’m awful when it comes to puns and I couldn’t help myself but to turn re-write and Friday into one strange word: Re-Wri-Day. Sorry…
But in conclusion: These posts are supposed to be always published on a Friday, but not necessarily on every Friday that comes from now on…just the Fridays when I feel like editing an old post…
And what am I doing with this?
I am taking my old posts from the beginnings of writing this Blog and read them again to see what things I can change or add. They wont necessarily be actually re-written, but some changes will be made.
In the Re-Wri-Day post I’ll also give you a couple of thoughts on why I had chosen the topic and stuff you might be interested in.
So, let’s start with the very first post: Hello World
As being new to Blogging I just thought about how I wanted to go about writing my first post.
And as a programmer (I just noticed that I kind of never mentioned that openly before…ups…) I couldn’t have done it any differently then by using the Hello World-Java Code.
Unfortunately WordPress doesn’t really like formatting code-fragments properly, so I am stuck with a weird version of it. (If anyone knows how to make spaces and tabs in such a display, let me know.)
The things I added in the post include mentioning of this Blog being written in my second language and the things that were first on this page being my writings. I thought those things should be cleared up.
As it goes by the same title I also had a look at the static start page and changed a couple of phrasings. I guess what I put there is more or less enough for a passerby to know what this Blog can offer. Guess I should have a look at the About page at some point as well…it is rather…cryptic…
And that’s about it for this post as well and it concludes a rare week of three updates.
I don’t think that will happen that often again.
I don’t want to spoil you. 😉
I’m curious how this whole re-writing will work out and what changes I’ll make to the posts I have…maybe I’ll even find a post or two that does not need to be „re-written“…but I doubt that. 😀
