Santa’s Helper

Lies auf Deutsch

Remember when I said, the next post will be the review? Yeah, I’m pretty sure I also said „probably“. 😀
Sometime earlier this year I started playing a silly online game and they currently have an option where you send other players little gifts with random game items and if you want a small message. Another player and I decided to send them to each other on a daily basis and at some point she added the message „BOOM!“ and my brain went: Let’s turn this into a story!

I hate my brain sometimes … even if I like what came out of it. 😀

Anyway, here is the story that I created, have fun reading it:

Santa’s Helper

BOOM! BOOM

„What’s that noise?“ She wonders turning her head around and putting down the book she was reading.

It seemed to come from outside and for a moment she wondered whether she should check out what it is or rather what it had been, as it seemed to have stopped. Hesitantly she gets up from her armchair and walks over to her window. Slowly she draws the curtain to the side, but only far enough to peek outside. The light behind her paints a fine line onto her snowy lawn and she knows, whatever is out there, might notice that she is watching. Suddenly afraid she shuts the curtains again and takes a step away from the window.

Still, her curiosity is not satisfied so she hurries to turn out the lights, except for the fairy lights, and returns to the window, slowly opening the curtains. Looking outside she turns her head to each side. On her left she sees nothing. To her right she sees a sleigh standing on the white lawn. It’s painted red and green with black borders accenting it. In the back she sees a large, tightly tied sack; different shapes sticking out of its side every which way. She looks down and sees black reins lying in the snow at the foot of the sleigh. Following them she sees a couple of reindeer pawing the snow nervously; their heads with the large antlers turning from side to side. She blinks a few times not believing what she is seeing before her.

Without warning she hears the loud noise again. Startled she jumps away from the window. Peeking over the windowsill she gives it another try. The white snow now had streaks of black behind the sleigh and looking up she notices an exhaust pipe beneath it. She frowns; a sleigh with an engine?

Suddenly a burly man dressed in brownish red robes appears behind the rear end of the sleigh and kicks the pipe, a grumpy look on his face. For a moment he just stares in turn at it and the large sack, eventually he sighs visibly; his whole frame shaking. Slightly concerned and still curious she rises up a bit higher. The man taps his foot impatiently and crosses his arms. Unexpectedly his gaze lands on the window and their eyes meet. His frown turns into a bright smile and all she can do is stare back at him. For just a second she closes her eyes and when she opens them again, he is gone.

She stands up straight and presses her head against the window to see where the man had gone.
„Ho ho ho“ She suddenly hears from behind. Startled she bumps her head against the glass and turns around.
There he was, standing in her living room, beaming at her with a big grin.
She stands agape not knowing what to say, slight pain pulsing in her temple.
„Do you happen to have a bottle brush or something akin to it?“ He asks her.

Still, not quite understanding the situation she looks him up and down. He looks a lot younger than she expected; his full beard not even remotely white. The hair looking out beneath the green beany was of a deep brown, as were his eyes that seemed to glow with joy and fear alike. Her eyes land on his black boots and the small puddle that had already formed around them. Her eyes widen.
„My floor!“ She yells at him.
„Ah, sorry about that“, he simply apologizes, lifting a heavy boot. „So, do you have a bottle brush?“ He changes the topic, urgency in his voice.
„But…“, she starts, her brows furrowed.
„I don’t have a bottle brush“, she finally says still looking at his wet boots.
„Well, that is unfortunate…“, he replies sadly and sighs.
„But I have a chimney broom“, she adds reluctantly.
„Brilliant!“ He beams. „Could I borrow it?“
„If you stop ruining my floor…“ she agrees more grumpily than would have been necessary.
„Of course, thank you, oh, so much“, he replies.
With a nod she walks over to her chimney and grabs the instrument. „Here you go, now get out of my living room!“ She scolds.
„As you wish“, he accepts with a booming laugh.

She leaves to get her cleaning supplies, when she returns with mop and bowl in hand he is gone again, as is the puddle. „Seriously?!“ She exclaims, drops the supplies and runs to the window.
Outside she sees him kneeling behind the sleigh and thrusting the broom into the exhaust pipe.
Eventually she opens the window and calls out: „Why does the sleigh have an engine anyway?“
He looks up, grins at her and simply explains: „It helps the reindeer when the wind is too heavy.“
She snorts at that and can’t help the grin spreading across her face.

After he is done he puts the broom on the ground and goes around the sleigh. Shortly afterwards he tries to start the engine again. This time no ‚Boom‘ is heard and grey smoke evenly rises from the pipe before the engine is turned off again.

Without a sound he appears in front of the window: „Would you mind if I kept the broom until tomorrow?“, and adds nodding towards the sack. „I promise to bring it back when I’m done“
She looks at him and at the sleigh, then sighs. „Okay“, she gives in.
„You have my deepest gratitude“
„Yeah. Good luck, I guess“, she only agrees, nodding towards the sleigh.
„Thank you and Merry Christmas“ He grins.
„Merry Christmas“, she replies with a smile as he returns to the sleigh and urges the reindeer into a trot.
She watches as they run faster and faster down the road and eventually set off into the sky. She grins. No one will ever believe her.

After a while she closes the window and returns inside.

The next morning, leaning against the table beneath her small Christmas tree stood the broom and at its feet a small gift. Tied to the staff of the broom is a small card that reads: „Thank you, Nicholas.
Curiously she unwraps the present and inside she finds her favourite childhood book that she had lost long ago and was never able to get a hold of again; until now.
„You’re welcome, Santa“, she murmurs, smiling brightly.

„Also, hast du eine Flaschenbürste?”

The Crib

As promised today you get the English translation of my story for the Bücherstadtkurier. They posted a call for entries for their Literary Advent Calendar and I thought for a moment about what I would submit. As one of my stories (called Nebeljagd – Mist Hunt) was published in the March issue of their magazine by the same name, I thought I at least give it another try, maybe they’d like it as well. At first I thought about re-working one of the stories of my first Advent Calendar, but after receiving an e-mail where one of their staff mentioned, that that it’d be okay, even if they’d prefer new stuff, I thought about what I could do instead.
Well, the result is what got me included.

So have fun with:

The Crib

Harry stood before the low cupboard in his friends‘ living room and gazed curiously at it. Spread across its entire surface stood the most different figurines within and around an open square made of Lego bricks.
„Ben, what is this?“ He asked after a moment.
„My crib. It’s Christmas,“ he answered naturally and came to stand beside him.
„Your crib. Made of Lego?“
„Yeah. Buying one would have been boring, so I arranged one myself,“ Ben revealed with a grin.
„I can see that.“ Harry sceptically took out the figurine of a wrinkly, long-eared goblin creature. „You do know that it’s called Baby-Jesus and not Baby-Yoda, right?“
„Yeah, so? That’s my shortest figurine.“ Ben merely shrugged his shoulders and put his hands in his pockets.
„Okay…“ Harry carefully put the Yoda-figurine back into the converted feeding through made out of toilet paper rolls and pointed at a red and black clad, heavily armed, as well as a brawny, green figurine directly beside it: „Does this mean, Deadpool and Hulk are Mary and Joseph?“
„Obviously. One is wrinkly, the other is green. Fits,“ Ben confirmed beaming.
„If you say so…“ Disbelievingly Harry shook his head and let his gaze wander across the crib.
Instead of Donkey and Ox the inside of the wide Lego structure housed a jet black car with wing-like spoilers and a white station wagon with a crossed out ghost on its door. The remaining space to the left of the actual nativity scene was filled with the flock of sheep. It consisted of differently sized, mostly bronze coloured pepper pot-like robots, which were guarded by several metal man with straws for crooks.
Ben had followed his gaze and defended himself: „I know it should be the other way round, but my Daleks just are smaller and make better sheep.“
„Of course, that is completely logically.“ Harry sighed wearily. With a look to the right he asked: „And The Doctor, Superman and DARTH VADER are the Three Wise Men?“
„Yup. They always say one of them is black.“
For a moment Harry quarrelled with himself, then he corrected: „Black: yes; Mass murderer: No. You could have used Batman, at least they would all be heroes.“
„But I already have the Batmobile as Donkey!“ Ben protested.
„Of course. That wouldn’t fit.“
„Exactly.“
For a moment they were silent, then Harry discovered a small, winged, pupil-less figurine on top of the pointed roof of the building.
„And who’s that?“ He asked turning the figurine back and forth.
„The Archangel Gabriel, duh“, Ben only said. As Harry was still looking at him in confusion, he added: „From Supernatural.“
„You’re watching that?“
„No, the figurine was in merch box once. But it fits doesn’t it? Wasn’t Gabriel the one who proclaimed the whole thing?“
„That is probably the only part of the crib, that actually makes sense“, Harry determined with another sigh.
„Oh come on, admit it: That’s the best crib you’ve ever seen!“ Ben challenged him.

Behind the Scenes

Admit it, you’d like to have a crib like that as well! 😀 I know I would, even if I’d change a few things (aside from the fact that I don’t own the majority of figurines, would I – most likely – not include anything DC or Star Wars related).
Apart from that was it quite difficult for me to translate from German to English after translating English to German for about two months (the Advent Calendar + JourneyQuest Season 3), so I hope I didn’t make too many mistakes – or phrased things weirdly. Let me know if I did!
Also let me know, if the word „crib“ or „nativity scene“ is more commonly used for the thing I’m describing. I wasn’t sure, but as we’re just calling it a „Krippe“ (fully „Weihnachtskrippe„) I decided crib was the one I wanted to go with.

I hope you’re having nice holidays!

Stay save,

Advent Calendar: Door/Türchen #24

Damian

Kin wollte also abreisen, er hatte kin vertrieben.

„Du?! Was hast du hier verloren?
„Mein Geld?“, fragte Sasha verdutzt.

„Was habt Ihr mit ihm gemacht, nachdem Ihr ihn erwischt habt?“, wollte Mina nachdrücklich wissen.
„Was hast du mit meinem Geld gemacht?

Seid gespannt. 😉
Bis dann

Damian

Contrary to what he had expected was the work for the Smith not that much of a punishment at all. He had to muck the stables, help the apprentices to shovel coals or to keep the furnace evenly heated with bellows or sweep the house, court yard or smithy. They weren’t easy tasks and partly heavy labour, but everyone in the service of the smith had to do these tasks. The smith and his wife turned out to be quite loving people, that simply wanted to give him a second chance.
One evening Damian had been ordered to see Kurt. Kurt sat in an old rocking chair and smoked his pipe, while a warm fire crackled in the fireplace and urged Damian to sit down. Damian took the fluffy sheepskin in front of the fireplace as seat.
“Why do you steal, Damian?” Kurt wanted to know after a moment.
Puzzled the boy looked up to him. “Because I can?” Damian asked more than he reasoned.
“Wouldn’t you rather like to learn an honest craft?” Kurt continued.
“I – No teacher would take me”, Damian admitted disheartened and looked to the floor.
“As a thief your nimble-fingered, the profession of a gold smith could be just right for your skills”, Kurt thought loudly and smoked his pipe.
“Think about it. I will give you a few task so you can try it and if it isn’t for you, then you’ve at least learned that your current craft has consequences”, Kurt revealed to him and added after a moment: “Now go to bed. Tomorrow will be an exhaustive day”
Every now and then over the next few days Damian tried his skills with small trinkets or armour or shield ornaments. To his amazement did he enjoy it, but deep inside he was pulled onwards and it even more so, when the foreigner arrived. He was tall and slim and no human, that much Damian knew. As he was staying in the stables as well he soon learned that the foreigner was a Stoneling. Damian nearly spent the whole night with Sasha, as he – kin, as Stoneling talked about each other – had introduced himself – kimself – and peppered him – kim – with questions regarding his – gaz – folk. And the Fernweh was back.
The next day he had made up his mind and so he asked the Stoneling during the late breakfast if he could accompany kim. Sasha denied and advised him to stay, but that was not what Damian wanted. He walked the dining room up and down and thought of ways to convince the Stoneling to change gaz when he heard footsteps. Out of habit Damian hid behind a curtain that lead to the storeroom and watched through gap how Kurt and Sasha came into the room and Kurt called for his wife. After a short conversation Sasha went out again and in his place Marie came into the room. Kurt told her that she should prepare a packet of food for Sasha. Kin wanted to leave then, he had driven kim away.
After a moment Kurt left the dining room as well and Maria came towards the storeroom. Damian sidestepped into the other corner and hid on the other side of the curtain until she went out again – knowing, that no one would be in the room, unsure, why he was still hiding, but to explain things would be too awkward now.
It didn’t take long until Marie put the packet on the table and left the room towards the laundry rooms. Damian was just about to leave his hideout as the door towards the courtyard opened again and Sasha came back into the room. Kin looked at the packet and then took a few coins out of a small purse that kin was wearing at gaz belt and put them on the table and took the packet with kim as he walked out. Now finally Damian could come out behind the curtain. For a moment he stood before the coins, took one of them and looked at it. He wanted to leave after all and Kurt had told Sasha that he did not want any payment, so he could simply take a little seed money and get going.
Forcefully Damian shook his head and practically threw the coin back. Something inside of him was reluctant to take from these people. Still, he had made a decision and thus he hurried to the stables and hastily packed his things.
“So you made up your mind…” A calm voice noted behind him and Damian startled.
Kurt leaned against the door of the box and watched him with a mixture of sadness and disappointment. Damian couldn’t look him in the eyes and lowered his gaze. Kurt sighed and went away. Damian shortly watched him go and then went back to his luggage. He shouldered his backpack when he heard the clacking of horse shoes. Kurt held one of the oldest horses at the reins, a small Haflinger that he had had to groom every now and again during the last weeks. Without warning Kurt held out the reins towards Damian.
“Your payment. You worked well and I would have liked to take you as an apprentice, but your driven onwards, so I can’t hold you back. I hope you have learned your lesson and will try to find a proper apprenticeship”, he revealed with a sad smile.
“I-“, Damian was speechless and hesitantly took the reins.
Thunderstruck he hugged the smith tightly.
“Thank you”, he murmured with a tear chocked voice.
No one, who knew what he was, had ever been this cordially to him. A thief and moocher, scum, a no one and he still had given him a chance and for that Damian would forever be thankful. Kurt patted him on the back and Damian broke away from him and mounted the horse.
“Take good care of the two of you!” Kurt demanded and stroked the mares neck.
Damian nodded and spurred her right away. Maybe he’d manage to catch up with Sasha.

Sasha

Sasha’s been on gaz way for quite a bit as kin suddenly heard the sound of hooves behind kim. Kin didn’t think anything about it, as this was an often ridden road, so kin didn’t deal with it further. It didn’t take long and kin had left the picturesque town behind kim, but kin could still hear the other horse behind kim. Still kin didn’t take it for anything special, even though kin slowed down so the other could ride up to kim, but the steps remained steadily behind kim. Shortly after the town kin came into a forest and it seemed to kim as if the steps had relocated to the brushwork. Deep inside kin readied kimself for an ambush, with one hand kin took the reins, with the other kin clasped gaz sword. But the ambush never came. A meadow rose behind the woods and now kin had had enough and turned around with gaz horse towards gaz pursuer. Behind him was Haflinger whose rider painstakingly tried hiding himself and his horse from gaz view. Without any tress or high grass this was a rather sorry display of swaying back and forth.
Sasha rode towards him until kin finally recognized the rider.
“You?! What are you doing here? Why did you not stay in the smithy?” Kin snapped at the boy.
“I-I wanted, couldn’t stay there longer”, the other meekly replied.
“And that is why you steal a good horse from your master and come cowardly running after me?!” Sasha accused him and took the reins with a jerk.
“I didn’t steal it!” Damian defended himself and was just about able to stay on the beast that startled due to the jerk.
“How did you get this beast?” Sasha demanded to know.
“The master gave it to me! As payment!” Sasha practically yelled at kim.
“As payment?” Kin asked now confused and loosened his grasp on the reins.
“Yes, he understood that I did not stay in one place, but wants me to start a proper life without stealing and therefore gave me the horse!” Damian explained and added: “I didn’t even take your money, even if I had the chance!”
“My money?” Sasha asked puzzled.
“Yes, I was hiding in the dining room the whole time – out of habit”, Damian admitted bummed.
“I told you that I do not want to travel with you and you ignored my words and followed me. What do you expect me to do now?” Sasha wanted to know.
“Please, Sasha! Give me a chance! I want to better myself! And I have the feeling that by your side I can become a better person!” Damian pleaded.
Sasha watched him for a moment. Kin saw sincerity in his eyes and recognized the wish to change in the other’s features. Kin sighed.
“All right. You can accompany me, but if you steal from someone I will continue my journey without you, are we understood?” Kin decided.
“Yes”, Damian only returned with a node.
Sasha let go of the reins and turned gaz horse back towards the road and rode ahead. Damian followed kim silently and for a while neither of them spoke a word.
The sun was vanishing behind the horizon as the two of them reached high city walls. The height was nowhere near keep up with Sasha’s native mountains, but it was impressive to see something like this around a human settlement. Kin did not know what awaited them on the other side, but kin was already curious how things would continue with kim and the thief.

Mina

“You know him?” Mina asked perplexed.
“Yes, that rascal tried stealing from my customers, but we caught him red handed!” The innkeeper told her proudly.
“What do you have to do with him?” He right away wanted to know and seemed ready to shoo her off on the spot.
“He stole from me, too”, Mina admitted discontented.
“You won’t be the only one, Sweetie!” The innkeeper laughed at her confession.
“What did you do with him, after you caught him?” Mina insistently wanted to know.
“The smith took him. There he has to work off his sentence, even if we had preferred to see his hands rolling…” The innkeeper fantasized.
“Where can I find the smithy?” Mina asked impatiently and the innkeeper explained it to her.
Right away she continued on her way and soon reached the smithy. She unhorsed, a mixture of rage and anticipation bubbling inside auf her, and went onto the courtyard.
“Hello?” She cautiously called when she couldn’t see anyone.
A tall, strongly build man with a full beard came out of one of the buildings and cleaned his hands with his apron.
“How can I help you? Is something wrong with your horse?” He greeted her friendly.
“No. Thanks. I’m looking for Damian”, she jumped to the important topic right away.
“Damian?” You’ve just missed him. He journeyed on, why?” He explained calmly.
“Journeyed on? That can’t be!” She complained, close to tears.
She had been so close and now everything would be for naught.
“He stole from you, didn’t he?” The smith asked and received a nod as answer.
“As far as I know did he ride southwards on a Haflinger; by now probably together with a rider on a black horse. Maybe you’ll catch up with them”, he suggested to Mina, pity in his voice.
“South?” Mina made sure immediately with new courage and got back on her horse.
It wasn’t easy for her to do that from a standing position, as she was used to ponies, but by now she had gotten used to it and managed it without a lot of trouble.
“Exactly”, the smith confirmed and told her which roads she had to take.
Mina spurred her horse as fast as she could. A break would cost her precious time. She rode through a small forest and leaves swirled behind her. She rode across a field and a cloud of dust followed her. Then finally, as the day was drawing to its end, she saw two riders on the horizon that looked up to a tall city wall and fit the description the smith had given her. Anger again boiled inside of her, she had finally found him.
“Forgive me”, she begged her horse and send her powers through it.
Without warning several roots shot up from the ground in front of the Haflinger and the beast reared up and threw down his rider. Mina had nearly reached them as she jumped down from her own horse that had just gotten slower. Angrily she ran to the one lying on the ground. Just as he wanted to get up again, she jumped at him and threw him back down.
“You bastard!” She yelled at him and hit him hard in the face, before she took him by the collar and shook him.
“What did you do with my money? Did you think you’d get away with this?” She shouted and around them the ground shook a little.
“I still have it! I still have it!” Damian yelled back at her and Mina let go of him, puzzled.
“Except the bill, I did not use it for anything! I just couldn’t do it!” He revealed to her, holding his hands protectively before his face.
“Then give it back!” Mina demanded and hit him on the chest like a stubborn child.
“It’s in my backpack”, Damian implied and waved a little away where it had dropped during the fall.
Mina got up and threw the backpack at him. Damian had sat up by now. Under her watchful eye he rummaged in it shortly and then finally took out Mina’s purse.
“Here, nearly everything still inside”, he told her and threw it towards her.
“I’m sorry”, he added when Mina looked at it with tears of joy in her eyes.
The other rider cleared his throat.
“It is time to enter the city before the gates close”, he suggested.
Mina looked up at him, she had never met a Stoneling before. His height alone was impressive to her, but together with his calm composure she felt childish for her own behaviour. A hue of read flittered across her face as she went over to her own backpack that she had dropped when she had jumped down.
“Would it be alright if I paid for you tonight? As compensation?” Damian cautiously asked after he had gotten up.
“Are you paying with your own money?” Mina retorted sneeringly and took the reins of her horse, the backpack and the money inside it again on her back.
“Yes”, Damian answered hesitantly.
“Tonight I will pay for the three of us. You, Damian, still have to earn money”, the Stoneling decided and turned his horse towards the gate and spurred it.
Damian and Mina followed him silently, knowing that any more words would be useless right now.

Behind the Scenes

And here ends the story of Mina, Damian and Sasha. I’m not sure yet, how I will continue it, but I do already have a few ideas. Next december at last it’ll be revealed, if I’ll continue it like this. 😉
But now I want to hear from you:
Did you like the story?
How did you like this way of reading (following different characters)?
Whom did you like most and whom not at all?
In any case do I wish you:

Frohe Weihnachten! (A Merry Christmas! 😉 )

A lot of presents and a great time with your loved ones!
We’ll see us in a few days, as there probably will be a collection of the story. Stay tuned. 😉
Until then

Advent Calendar Help – Adventskalender Hilfe

Lies auf Deutsch
After late night ramblings about unicorns I now am sitting here in the middle of September thinking about preparations for Christmas, isn’t that wonderful? >_<
Anyway, what I am actually thinking about is this:
I want to try creating my own advent calendar for this years Christmas.
The window should consist of a photo and a short story by me for the given picture and this is where the help is needed.

To all you photographers out there:

If you have any photos – be they Christmas-related, snowy or not – where you would like to learn a story behind the picture, please send me what you’ve got.
In total I would, obviously, need 24 pictures, but I can’t promise to have an idea for every one I get, so you can send more than one entry.

So these are the rules for submissions:

  • You have to own the right to the picture. (You will be named in the window/door post of course)
  • The picture has to be decent (no propaganda for violence, racism or other awful things)
  • The picture has to be send to me through comments, messages (e.g. Facebook, Google+ or Mail) or however you fancy.

I guess the absolute deadline would be the 23rd December around noon (UTC +1), but I hope to get the entries done before that.
You wont really win anything with this but recognition for your work and a tale, but maybe that’s enough to lift your Christmas spirit. 🙂
So let’s see if we can pull this off together.
I’m already curious what you’ll send me. 🙂

An all euch Fotografen da draußen:

Annoyances

To get my mind off of my Bachelor’s thesis for a moment I’d like to just write up some stuff that’s been bugging me recently.
So basically this is just a rant post and you can skip it, more serious posts will be added when I can properly concentrate on them.
And nothing I’ll write down here is in any way meant as offence! It’s just me being annoyed and ranting.
Anyway, the end of my thesis is drawing near and at this point I am pretty much annoyed by the whole editing circle, that I just want the work to be over.
That annoyed that I even made a friggin sketched graph for it…with crappy arrows…

The vicious editing cycle

The vicious editing circle

I know the notes I get are helpful and every re-work improves the thesis, but I really would like to finish the whole thing already…
I can’t help it though. The thesis gets into print on the 23rd and until then I’ll have to go through the circle a couple of more times.
It is supposed to be a proper thesis after all.
It annoys me that my old laptop died shortly before Christmas. Expensive machines shouldn’t be allowed to do that! The new one came just in time for my birthday, but Windows 8 is something I still have to get used to. And I still haven’t finished to properly set it up, as this and everything else is postponed until I’m finished with the thesis. And that still doesn’t change the fact that my notebook from work is one of the most annoying things I’ve ever worked with: slow, loud, old and evil. (It loves blue screens)
It annoys me that I am barely able to work on other writing related stuff right now.
Occasionally my mind drifts off to think about things I could write, but after hours of staring at letters on paper or on the screen I really don’t feel like adding more letters – let alone some in a different language.
This also includes writing this, as I am annoyed that I am writing this, but less annoyed as I can use it to rant and complain.
It annoys me that I can’t finish any of my drafts that I could have posted otherwise.
It annoys me that the last proper post I managed recently was posted nearly two weeks ago (It is however not unusual for me to take long breaks between posts, but still.) and was about a totally random Fandom problem, with a totally unnecessary analysis and fanfiction-like tale about characters being stuck in an elevator…
It annoys me even more that when I posted it on my newly created Tumblr-page, people were liking and re-blogging it, but many just saw the image and didn’t look for the actual content of the post. (Including re-posts with comments like „Someone should write that fanfic“ and „All hell would break lose„, which were both covered in the post.)
This however is partly my own fault as I cryptically described the fact that there was an analysis and a fanfiction-thing involved (Fixed that, but the wave of reblogs died down already, so no one really saw that…). Well, at least some of the Fandoms should have gotten it and a few found their way here from there…
Anyway, the post was still clicked at by a bunch of people (90 so far, to be precise) and the tale-version on fanfiction.net was also favourited, read and commented by some others. And followed, even though I said that it will not be continued. (Though some of them replied by saying they would like me to continue it….what strange ideas people have…)
So basically I am annoyed that people refuse to read properly.
But as I am doing this myself at times I can’t really blame anyone.
It also annoys me that I managed to write that ~4k post in less than a day and it took me several months to write my ~12k thesis…yes I know, research takes time away as well, but it’s still awful…
I’m also annoyed that there wasn’t any snow yet.
I don’t want it to be as horrible as in January 2010 and 2011, where the snow mountains on the motorway were twice the size of my car, but some snow to make it at least look like it’s winter would be nice.
On Christmas Day (24th) I sat in our living room and couldn’t see a thing on my screen, because the sun shown as brightly as if it was just a normal spring day. To emphasize that: Christmas Day felt like a day in spring!
It was snowing in Egypt, why can’t we have at least some of it here?
Though if the snow were to come I would probably complain about freezing and awful transport.
Whatever the weather does, it does it wrong…or we are just too picky.
It also annoys me that Christmas and New Years Eve didn’t really feel like either because of the high temperatures and my thesis was constantly at the back of my mind.
15 days in and I still don’t feel like we have a different year.
And apart from remembering that it is 2014 and not 2013 I now also have to remember a new number for my age…again….that is so annoying…Why can’t we just say our year of birth and people do the Math themselves? That’s what I have to do anyway when I’m asked how old I am…just can’t remember the flipping number…
Anyway, I kind of feel like I’m coming to an end with things that annoy me right now. At least I can’t think of more…
Well, this is kind of more than enough for a random rant…
I’m sorry to bother you with this, but I had to let off some steam.
If you like, you can share your annoyances as well.
I’ll gladly listen.
This way everybody can be annoyed. 😀

Frohe Weihnachten

or Merry Christmas as you would say in English. Alternatively I could wish you many other things for all those other holidays that are celebrated around this time of the year, but I stick with this one today.

A few weeks ago I was asked by the Fairytale Traveler Christa Thompson to write a guest post about the Christmas traditions in Germany.
Between writing my Bachelor’s thesis, getting sick and my laptop deciding to bit its final farewell, I managed to write a bit about how Christmas is celebrated around here. You can find the full post on her website: Christmas Traditions in Germany.
Thanks to TheFairytaleTraveler again for publishing my post. 🙂

Adventskranz (by SolLuna from Wikimedia)

Christmas is a time for the family to get together, a time of light and a time of wonder. Experiences you gain from your childhood sip into your adult life. For a long time now Santa Claus is just a man in a suit for me, but I still think it’s great that children do believe in this being, this guardian of wonders (A few weeks ago I reflected on my experiences on this Guardian of Childhood).
The lights that shines through the streets at this time of year. The candles that are lighted in the rooms. The Christmas pyramids turning their wheels and creating magical picture on the ceiling. It all has something special, something unique, that isn’t quite the same at any other time of the year. In short you could say: Halloween is fascinating for me because of the darkness surrounding it, Christmas because of its lights.

Also the Christmas markets that you can spend hours at with friends and families. Drinking Glühwein (hot spiced wine), eating Mutzen or roasted almonds. If you pass through a market on an every day basis like I have to with the Weberglockenmarkt in Neubrandenburg you could think you’d become tired of it, but it’s different. If you go there in private the atmosphere becomes different than just going there for lunch or passing through. I can’t explain why, but it just is that way and I don’t mind. This way a Christmas market can still be nice even though you’ve been at it several times.
So far I haven’t been at that many different markets. The most times I was at the ones in Neubrandenburg and Greifswald.
And only this year did I read the story behind the name of the Weberglockenmarkt, which is quite interesting as I might add

In a cold winter night a weaver (Weber) made his way home to Neubrandenburg, home to his family for Christmas. Shortly before he reached his destination he ended up in a horrible snow storm. The storm was that bad that he could not see where he was going. Whether he was coming closer to the city or straying further away.
For hours he wandered through the snowy forests until he heard the bells (Glocken) of the St. Marien church. The sound of those bells finally helping him to find his way or he would have frozen outside the gates of his home town.
In his memory the bells ring throughout Christmas and the market (Markt) gained its name.
(Read the full story in German here: Weberglockengeschichte)

Greifswald was always closer to my home town than Neubrandenburg. But it is a quite charming one with occasionally a Ferris Wheel that allows you to look high above the city, an area for children with booths were different Fairy Tales are portrayed and just a nice atmosphere in the more historic part of the city.
One time visits include Schwerin, Berlin (Gendarmenmarkt) and a small one in Hamburg and passing through the one in Elmshorn.

Schwerin was in my school time when we made a visit to the art museum and finished the trip with a stroll over the market. I can’t really remember it any more though.
The Gendarmenmarkt is a smaller and secluded market in Berlin where you even have to pay a small entrance fee. When I was there with Conan and Plusquamperfekt from The Forum and a childhood friend of mine, several years ago, it was just 1 Euro (as I just found the ticket in a book I’m trying to finish until the 31st). It was also quite full. Full of people and full of interesting (and quite expensive) self made goods. It still had a nice atmosphere for chatting about projects and Fantasy stuff.

I can’t remember which one we visited in Hamburg, but it was only a small one we had chosen for the Christmas staff party for the Eventteam (a small student project team for creating events for the students). It still was a great evening with some former, some current and new members of the team and a nice market.

I would like to see a couple of more markets in the future, even some bigger ones. They, however, have so many attendees that it’s far more stressful than fun and maybe not worth the trouble.

Even though there is much good done throughout the season for my family it unfortunately is also a time of mourning.
It was this day, five years ago that my grandfather passed away.
The first passing I consciously experienced within the direct family and it is still a sad memory. He will always be dearly remembered. Christmas time is a time to remember after all.
To remember what we have, what he have lost and to decide where we can go from there.
With this I wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope you will have some quiet time with your loved ones.
