Advent Calendar: Door/Türchen #9

Damian

Damian

“We’re a good team“, Damian commented and examined the loot he and Chloe had made.
“I can only agree to that”, she confirmed with a smile.
During their two raids Damian had more than once thought about whether he should ask Chloe to accompany him. They worked well together and they got along well, but deep inside of him was the fear that something would go wrong. He had tried several times to travel with other thieves and in the beginning everything usually went well, but then he said or did something stupid and the atmosphere was ruined and he had to continue on his own, but Damian was tired of travelling on by himself and simply needed the distraction.
“What do you think of travelling with me for a while”, he finally asked.
“Travelling with you?” She asked puzzled.
“Yeah, we could follow the market or pick a new town and try our luck there”, Damian thought out loud and nervously waved his hands while talking.
Chloe looked at him for a long, unbearable moment, before she finally said: “I’d really like that, but I can’t decide it by myself”
“What do you mean by that?” Damian asked dumbfounded.
“I’m not travelling alone. I’m travelling with my brothers”, she revealed to him, a look of pity on her face.
“Let me guess: Quite a large fellow, quite burly with a black full beard and a short blondie hanging on his coat-tails?” Damian guessed and showed the height of the two thieves he had seen with his hands.
“Sound like Carl and Louis”, Chloe laughed.
Damian nodded thoughtfully and gazed onto the crowd. Now with the knowledge that she wouldn’t be his own company, but also her two brothers, he feared that the whole thing would go downhill. Pretty girls and – especially older – brothers weren’t a good combination for travel companions. But he had asked his questions and would accept his fate, whatever it might be.
They had to wait quite a while before the other two arrived. The older one – Carl – looked at Damian distrustfully, de younger one – Louis – didn’t notice him at all and proudly showcased his loot to his siblings.
“Put that away, idiot!” Chloe scolded him and tried to shield the spread and fully loaded hands of her brother from view, the men followed suit.
After he had done what she told him, she repeated Damian’s suggestion, to travel together for a while, to her brothers. Reluctantly Carl agreed, while Louis was already absolutely excited about it. So it was decided. Damian could stay with them for now and in honour of the occasion and their good raid, the four thieves went into the inn together indulged in a small feast.
Of course this feast did not pass without consequences. By meat and drink they talked shop about their experiences and stories. A lot of mead and beer ran into their tankards and bellies until they were all quite tipsy. Louis became boisterous and Carl brought him to his room, so that Chloe and Damian were alone in the pub. It didn’t take long for them to run out of topics to discuss and they just simply stared at each other with wide grins. Chloe was a pretty woman and seemingly, she also saw something in Damian and without much thought he let the moment carry him into a kiss.
Of course it was then that Carl returned.
Of course he did not like what he saw.
He pulled Damian away from his sister and berated him. Defending himself was useless and even Chloe’s pleading and begging was of no use. Soon Carl’s fist landed in Damian’s face and the innkeeper had enough and in the end threw Damian out of his tavern.
He had done it again.
He had screwed up again.
He could slap himself or do anything to himself.
It had been so great with the siblings and now it was already over.
It could have been so good, but he had to go and botch it up.
Disappointed by himself he shuffled through the streets, his hands deep in his pockets and randomly kicked loose pebbles. Eventually he found a quiet, sheltered alley where he few chests and barrels were stored. He took his blanket out of his backpack and threw it into an overturned barrel and climbed inside, put his head on the backpack and covered himself. Damian was too exhausted to look for a different sleeping berth – even if the alcohol was gone by now.
